WRI’s assessment
Australia’s Logistics Growth Index slipped to 49.0 in September, a 0.2-point decline that kept the sector in contraction and placed the nation 15th of 16 in the Asia-Pacific region. The downturn was primarily driven by a deepening contraction in business volume and goods for sale, reflecting weakening factory output, soft household spending, and impending holiday-related shipping delays.

With factory output weakening and consumer spending flat, there was less freight to move in Australia in September, and a sharp drop in business confidence deepened the contraction. Warehousing helped offset some of that, with strong take-up of space. — Stephen Poh, Principal Economist, World Research Institute
